Associate Professor Susan West from the ANU School of Music, has been announced as one of the winners of The Australian Financial Review and Westpac 100 Women of Influence Awards for 2016.

Associate Professor West, who is the Convenor of the Music Education Program at the School of Music, is a winner in the local and regional category.

She has been in musical education for more than 40 years and running the ANU Music Engagement Program for close to 20 years. She was both honoured and very happy to be recognised for her achievements.

"I don't think I'm particularly well known outside of education and community circles which are themselves not in the public eye as such," she said.

"My work is all about passing on skills and confidence to others so, paradoxically, the lower my public profile, the better I'm doing my job."

Associate Professor West said she believed very strongly in the power of music to help others.

"The Music Engagement Program, with the help of all its users, has found a way of maximising benefit for everyone involved. I am very lucky to be doing this work, and having it recognised is the icing on the cake."

Professor Emily Banks, Head of Chronic Disease Epidemiology at the National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health at ANU is a winner in the Innovation category.

ANU Vice-Chancellor Professor Brian Schmidt AC congratulated Professor Banks and Dr West on this recognition.

"On behalf of the University, I congratulate Susan and Emily on their latest recognition," Professor Schmidt said.

"To be named in the 100 women of influence list is an outstanding achievement and highlights their commitment to their research and their ability to inspire those around them."

The winners of each of the 10 award categories will be announced on 27 October at the Sydney Town Hall.
